GSP PEDAGOGICAL EXPLANATION & USER MANUAL
First of all the Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) takes the traditional
pencil-and-paper geometry class and transforms it into a dynamic learning
environment. By using the tool's dragging features, students can observe
countless examples of different figures quickly and easily. With GSP, the
classroom becomes a student-centered rather than teacher-centered environment.
Students in this environment feel a sense of control over their learning, even
when the teacher is the person designing the sketches. (Gray,2008)
Decimal numbers are quite abstract and difficult to
comprehend in detail demonstration, students have difficulties when exact
understanding is concerned. Hence, Geometer Sketchpad facilitates really to see
and analyze explicitly each digit. Hence. the project which includes the
detailed demonstration of decimal numbers makes more easier to stimulate association
especially between decimal parts of number.
In the Project of decimal numbers, there is a number line a
point could move freely on the line. Students encounter firstly with
demonstration, reading and writing of decimal numbers in 5th grade after topic of
rational numbers. In 6th grade, they learn to
analyze decimal numbers and round up to digit wanted, and repeating
decimals in 7th and square root of decimals in 8th grade.
The Project could be made adaptation with necessery for each level student according
to curriculum and instruction.
Our Project gives a chance for students to interpret the decimal
number in details and uto see where the point takes place in the number line
when the digits change. Furhermore, students can also realize that a decimal
number is actually a number which has not only unit digits but also tenths,
hundreths and thousanths digits.
USER MANUAL
In our Project, there is a number line and point moved on, also buttons called as "Yaklaş", "Yerini Göster", "Nokta Nesnesini Hareketlendir", "Sıfırla". Immediately under that number line there is a button , and when the user presses on that button one another number line exists and this one the number line would be more detailed in terms of the units such as tenths, hundreths, thousandhs.
The distinction among the numerical axises is shifting of the place of the point due to there should be a new numberical axis exists in every digit. Learners have the occasion to examine the number in details and have chance to see where the point takes place in the number line when the digits change by this program. In addition to these, students can also realize that a decimal number is actually a number which has not only units digit but also tenths, hundreths and thousanths digits.
Also, there is a red point on the first level number segment which constructed with unit digits and symbolizes a decimal number and the aim is to state the place of that point. To use of the program, you can use steps below;
- First screen when the program begin has a first level number line and a point moving freely on its. Also, there are "Yakınlaş" butons that work for extending decimal parts. When you press these button, you will see other lines that represent next decimal digit explicitly.
- Also, the implementation has an “ Noktayı Hareketlendir” buton that provides learners to move the red circled point to the wanted location in the first level number line. Furtheremore, after pressing to all “yakınlaş” buttons all level number lines will be exist with their extended forms and you can also press on “ noktayı hareketlendir” buton and can see all points change in different levels in which they take place and change according to the red point in the 1st number line.
3. The buton called as “Başlangıç Değeri provides learners to determine
their start point that they want and after writing the wanted
starting point and pressing to that button, the boundaries will automatically shift according to that starting point and by the way users can analyze and
see each decimal number in detail.
4. After such a training, if you want to analyze another
demonstration about decimal numbers, you should press on “sıfırla” buton. After
pressing that buton the program will reset all made actions and you can start
from the beginning again. Users can do the same thing again again and this
provides students the opportunity to make practice about estimating the true
decimal number.
